Konawaena Middle School

On June 24, 2009, Konawaena Middle School became the seventh school on the Big Island to receive a Sun Power for Schools photovoltaic (PV) system. The 3.96-kilowatt PV system was installed on the roof of B Building. With the installation, students can enhance their hands-on experience with renewable energy and learn how to harness the sun's power safely, effectively, and efficiently. The data collected from the PV system can be integrated into the students' curriculum while the power produced helps to reduce the school's electric bill.

System Details:

  • 3.96 kilowatt (kW) rated peak
  • Twenty-two (22) Suntech, 180 Watt, mono-crystalline modules
  • Sunny Boy SB4000US inverter
  • Internet based data acquisition system including wind speed, PV output, irradiance, ambient air temperature
