Pipeline Safety and Public Awareness

The Iwilei Pipeline

Since 1969, Hawaiian Electric Company has operated the Iwilei Pipeline to transport low sulfur fuel oil to the Honolulu Power Plant, which in turn provides energy security to government, businesses and residents in the downtown area and Waikiki.  The pipeline is buried underground along a one-mile stretch of Nimitz Highway, and is diligently maintained by Hawaiian Electric to ensure the safety and well-being of the community and residents.

For more information on the Iwilei Pipeline, read this brochure.

BEFORE YOU DIG…

Hawaii One Call Center, 1-866-423-7287,
To safeguard pipelines, anyone planning to dig near or around the Iwilei Pipeline such as contractors or excavators should call the Hawaii One Call Center at least five working days prior to digging.  The call center operates 24/7 and will alert Hawaiian Electric so we can properly mark or indicate the underground pipeline path, provide information about the route or give clearance to dig.

811, “Call Before You Dig,”
The national 811 number is available from anywhere around the country, and one phone call connects you to your local One Call Center.  You will be asked for the location of your digging job and your call will be routed to affected utility companies who will then send out a professional to mark the lines.  Calling 811 before every digging job gets your underground utility lines marked for free and helps prevent undesired consequences.

Common Ground Alliance, 703-836-1709,
Preventing damages to underground infrastructures is the main purpose of the Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association that is dedicated to public safety, environmental protection and integrity of services through promotion of effective damage prevention practices.  Learn about best practices for damage prevention and protection of underground facilities.
