Maui Electric Company offers interest free loans for the installation of energy saving solar water heating. Funds are provided by the County of Maui. Payments are based on expected energy savings. A typical family of four can save about $50 a month, depending on hot water use. Over 500 families are saving energy every month with this program.   How does the interest free loan program work? A down payment of 35% of the system cost (after any applicable rebates) is required at this time. A typical down payment is about $1610.   How much will I save? A typical family of four can save about $50 a month. Actual savings depend on each household's hot water use. Generally, larger households save more, and have a shorter pay back period.   Who is eligible? Renters or property owners with a Maui Electric account and a good payment history. The solar system must replace an existing electric water heater.
